What is Butlin’s?
What is a Holiday Camp?
And what’s a tiki bar called The Beachcomber Bar doing there?
I stumbled upon a video on YouTube the other day. It was filmed in the 60’s and it was about a tiki bar called The Beachcomber Bar. This place looked incredible!
It showed girls hula dancing and everyone looked like they were having a great time. Where was the bar located? I had no idea but the only clue I had was the narrator had a British accent.
This video was pure mid-century tiki eye candy and I’ve gone back and watched it over and over again. When you’re watching a video on YouTube there’re suggested videos on the right side and I noticed that a bunch of videos had Butlin’s or Butlin’s Holiday Camp in the title. I was curious to see what this Butlin’s place was about and clicked on a few videos.

If you’re not from the UK you would have no idea what these words are but If you’re from the UK you know that these are Butlin’s Family Camp locations.
Butlin’s is an amusement park chain that is located in the UK that has fun for all ages. There’re swimming, dining, amusement rides, group activities, all types of entertainment including comedy, singing and dancing. But what makes Butlin’s unique is that you can go there and stay in your own chalet!
Another thing that is unique to Butlin’s is their staff called Redcoats. If you need help looking for something fun to do just look for a person wearing a bright red jacket. They will send you in the right direction! Redcoats are Butlin’s life’s blood. They keep your visit at Butlin’s fun and entertaining.
Butlin’s opened their first location (Skegness) all the way back in 1936. Some of the locations have come and gone but Butlin’s is still offering up tons of fun for the entire family.
Butlin’s has something for all ages and back in the 60’s they had several themed bars for adults and nightlife entertainment. One of these themed bars was the Beachcomber Bar and it looked very impressive. What’s more impressive is that there was a Beachcomber Bar at several of the Butlin’s locations! I found several Beachcomber Bar postcards on the website www.redcoatsreunited.com.
Redcoats Reunited is an incredible resource on all things Redcoats and Butlin’s. There are tons and tons of pictures and information that span the several decades that Butlin’s has existed and I have literally spent hours going through the website. Make a point to check it out!
Here are some pictures of the Beachcomber Bars from the Redcoats Reunited website. The postcards are grouped by location.
Butlin’s Minehead
Butlin’s AYR
Butlin’s Bognor Regis
Butlin’s Filey
Butlin’s Skegness
Sadly, none of the Beachcomber Bars are around anymore, it’s a shame because all the Beachcomber Bars looked so cool! The tiki bars are gone but Butlin’s is still alive and well. I live in the United States, so visiting a Butlin’s Family Camp is a little tough for me, but if you live close to a Butlin’s, drop in a say hello to a Redcoat for me!
I’d like to personally thank Marriot for allowing me to use his pictures for this post. Here is the link to the Redcoats United website
Here is the Butlin’s Website
How great this was….if only I had a time machine. Love the research in finding these old places….keep it up.
I would have loved to have seen these tiki bars back in the day!
Awesome find Ray! It’s hard to find immersive environments like that anymore outside of a Disney park. Rainforest Cafes pale in comparison.
I see that you have stolen all the actual Beachcomber Bar postcard images from my website. You could have asked permission, and you should have credited my website, plus provided the URL link.
I would be interested to hear what you have to say in your defence.
I will take down this blog post.
