Are you a punk rock guy? I used to play drums in a band called Negative Approach from Detroit…
Chuck Burns is a musician from out of The Motor City and has been playing music for most of his life. He’s into rock and punk and yes, has played drums for Negative Approach which is one of the most influential hardcore punk bands there is. I’m a big fan of rock and punk and to answer Chuck’s question, Hell Yeah! I’m a punk rock guy! Chuck is also into tiki and has created his own tiki bar in his basement. It’s called The Satin Tiki Room and here is Chuck’s story…
What is the tiki scene like where you live?
Chuck-Its good with a great group of friends with killer home tiki bars. There’s lots of partyies and get togethers. And Max’s south sea hideaway (one of my fave tiki bars) is only 2 hours away!
What brought you into the tiki lifestyle and how long has it been part of your life?
Chuck-I started collecting in 1992 and I’ve been hooked ever since.
Can you give a little history of how it all came together?
Chuck-My collection has taken over my house! So, I figured it was time to do a proper Tiki bar room.
Any story behind the name of your bar?
Chuck-I wanted to do something different with the room, I wanted a bit more swank and figured the name should reflect that, hence “The Satin Tiki Room!” and obviously the walls and ceiling are satin black so it kinda named itself!
What is your favorite Tiki drink?
Chuck-A Mai Tai is my go to at a tiki bar but lately I’ve been enjoying a simple Tito’s and Pineapple juice.
What is your favorite Tiki bar? Not including your own!
Chuck-The Head Hunter lounge and The Lava flow Inn! I love the Mai Kai, Tiki Ti, Tonga Hut, The Inferno Room, and Michigan’s own Max’s South Sea Hideaway, plus a ton of others! My favorite tiki bar is the one I happen to be at.
Outside of great drinks, what do you think are essential elements in creating the perfect Tiki environment?
Chuck-Lighting and music!
What does the future hold for you and your home tiki bar?
Chuck-Lots of partying!
Chuck is a legend for Drummers here in Detroit. My style was heavily influenced by him when he was in Seduce. He also fronted a great band in speedball. I first met Chuck when he worked at rock of ages in Westland. He suggested all kinds of music to me. I still listen to today. I heard he also worked at ford like myself. And has a great love for all things tiki. Also like myself. Overall one of the coolest guys around. Great looking bar!!!!
Great pics Chuck, awaiting my invite! Ray, Chuck was 1 of the very first of the local TIKI crowd I got to know many years ago, happy to-say Chuck has made a few of my art purchases, n a few commissions along the way! Top Shelf guy!
