McMenamins is known for restoring old, classic buildings but this time they built from the ground up …
Kalama is a small town that most people drive through on their way down to Portland, or up to Seattle, depending on which way you’re going. Kalama has a couple of antique shops, a gas station, and the Columbia Inn where Elvis spent the night. There’s not much more to say about Kalama until now …
This is the Kalama Harbor Lodge …
McMenamins built Kalama Harbor Lodge right next to the Columbia River …
and it was inspired by the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui …
And what an amazing job they did. This building is georgous!
Let’s go inside. Now I’m going to put things on front street, there isn’t much “Tiki” at the Kalama Harbor Lodge. In fact the only Tiki I found was this guy …
But don’t let that you stop from checking out this amazing place.
On the ground floor you have the Pub and Harbor Lounge …
There are tropical elements like the bamboo used to make the bars …
Or an outrigger hanging above …
You just need to find them.
This is the main dining area of the Lodge. It serves a full menu and drinks. Your favorite McMenamins classics are all here!
There are only a handful of tropical cocktails on the menu, but they’re solid. I had the Jungle Bird …
They also have a brewery onsite!
The next two floors are where you’ll find the hotel rooms …
There are secret rooms on floors three and four. Here’s one of them …
And I’m not telling where the hidden door is!
There’s also a bar on the top floor. It’s called the Cloud Bar …
The Kalama Harbor Lodge is a must stop if you’re traveling through Kalama. With hotel rooms, cool décor, and great food and drinks, you might want to stay a while, or even overnight!
I’d like to thank Dieter Weber for all the pictures used for this post …
