Nothing lasts forever…
When I heard the news that Don The Beachcomber in Huntington Beach was closing, I was sad but not surprised. I remember the first time I visited Don The Beachcomber…
I couldn’t believe how big the place was!
It had several dining rooms…
A room with a stage for live music..
And of course there’s the Dagger Bar!
I thought two things: Don The Beachcomber needs a ton of people to fill in those seats and the rent must be astronomical! Well, the rent was expensive and it got even more expensive to the point that it wouldn’t even matter how much business the place got, it still couldn’t afford to make ends meet.
I’m reminded of the fact that children will blame themselves when their parents get divorced. They think that if only they behaved better or weren’t so much of a bother the divorce wouldn’t happen. We all know that this isn’t the case, and it pertains to Don The Beachcomber closing. There’s nothing we could have done…
Ordering all the Zombies and Mai Tai’s in the world isn’t going to stop a landlord from selling the land your favorite tiki bar is on. If they want to raise the rent, they can, if a tiki bar owner wants to call it quits, they can and will.
I love and cherish all the classic tiki bars that still exist and I know you all do too. Visit them and enjoy them as much as you can. Treat each visit like it may be your last.
My last visit to Don The Beachcomber was May 27, 2017. I didn’t know it would be my last time visiting this incredible tiki bar back then, but I know that now.
Nothing lasts forever…
