Tiki isn’t just about drinking Mai-Tai’s, it’s a celebration of Polynesian culture.
The Tiki Kon Art Show had many hand-crafted pieces of art which ranged from paintings to carvings. What was really cool is that everything was for sale!
This year there were more symposiums than ever before! There was a ton a great information to be had from all the great speakers.
The first symposium was Festivals Of The Pacific …
Christine and Christopher Lonie live in Hawaii and they’ve gotten to experience Polynesian cultures firsthand. For this symposium, they talked about different festivals they have attended and they about many of the cultural practices throughout Polynesia.
Next up was Clippermania hosted by Greg Clapp’s father: Dr. Bill Clapp …
Dr. Clap talked about Pan Am’s clipper flying boats that made it possible for people to travel to the South Pacific by air, instead of taking a much longer trip by ship. Though still a long flight by today’s standards, these clippers were more luxurious than you might imagine, and still cut down travel time to Hawaii substantially!
Last but certainly not least, we were treated to a showing of Bosko And The Rebirth Of Tiki.
This documentary was incredible! It talked about how Bosko got into craving, his influnces and his influence on tiki carving today. After the showing of the documentary, Sven Kirsten, Bosko and his wife Truss de Groot, were up on stage to answer questions. The room was packed!
After we got our learning on, it was time to let loose with some great surf rock!
Next post, Friday night’s entertainment. Stay tuned …
I’d like to thank Travis Bay for his pictures used for this post.
